Stan S asked:
Is this the best possible green tax shift or can you come up with a better one?
And by the way, your tax dollars are going to oil and coal by the billions…

“Green Energy” currently costs 3-10 times MORE than conventional energy-would that make you feel better?
definately. Need a paradigm shift! Everyone must be responsible for their energy use. Not by turning on the switch or stopping at the fuel bowser.
yes with out a doubt ,this should have been done decades ago but government greed and self promoting giants want to lobby for themselves as if they are going to take all there profits with them when they die.We should all wise up and go green instead of giving profits to dictators countrys
or we can use all the money from the war effort and solve the gas problem for good
Should the government have been giving money to oil and coal companies to begin with? Probably not. However, taxes on oil and coal (through gas and electricity taxes) generate billions of tax dollars.
But if we skip over the should, what is the best way to support green energy?
The problem here is in defining green. There is no simple definition. Nuclear energy doesn’t produce CO2, but is it green? What about hydroelectricity or wind power? Plenty of people don’t like them.
I would say it is generally a good idea to put sin taxes on negative externalities that can be accurately identified to reduce use or pay for clean up. However, history has shown that government is very bad at picking what the new paradigms should or will be. (Just look at how well the HDTV change is going.) Therefore government should either not subsidize anything, or make generic grants for alternative energy research available.
