The bad part of biodiesel is that it still uses oil, which is what we need to get away from. It is not the best energy source out there, but it’s a start. I researched alternative fuels and decided to go with natural gas, which is environmentally friendly and it’s super cheap where I live (Utah). 87 cents a gallon! I bought 2 cars that run on natural gas, and I love ‘em! Check out my source below to learn more about it. Sorry I can’t be of more help with biodiesel, but in my case, natural gas was obviously the way to go.
The down side is the resources to make biodiesel actually cost more per gallon. Waste fry oil is free but it’s not always easy to make premium diesel from it. And biodiesel doesn’t work well in cold weather(gelling) unless mixed with petroldiesel.
But it lubricates better than petroleum and if you have your own farm and could grow sunflowers, which are the easiest resource to grow and press for oil, along with collecting waste oil from local diners………….you can save $$$$$$$$ not to mention cleanliness and mpg. In cold weather some have rigged smaller fuel tanks with heaters, which I am looking into.
Virtually all biod is a product of industrial ag farming that uses 100% dino juice to keep costs down. If there was no dinod, biod and ‘grease’ and everyother feedstock would be worth vastly more/gal. I think its false to assume that your grease is ‘blood for oil’ free.
There is also the concept of un-sustainable farming for biofuels. This is not a trivial issue and needs to have a huge amount of thought put into how we treat the land. If we destroy everything to save ourselves, doesnt seem much worth it.
Biofuels get the false blame for increased food prices. As I have explained many times, its not biofuels but energy cost that is really contributing to the higher food prices. Biofuels is not the cause but a symptiom of rising energy prices. There is also a solution in this issue, waste/poop into energy. Ag waste, industrial and human biowaste has a huge amount of harvestable energy. IMO, its our duty to clean up the mess we have made and biofuels is one of the ways we will pay for the technology and political/commercial will.
Even tho in the short term, it makes economic sense, in the long term, growing biofuels is a dumb idea.
They are all about the same as the power comes from the burning of corbin . There will be some small differences but if they produce CO2 of equal amounts it is about the same.
