The US has no hydrogen distribution network and its very expensive to build one. Its the smallest atom it would be hard to contain without losing it to leaks.

Is there a practical cost effective way to produce the large amounts of it required to drive all of our cars?

hydro power-I assume you mean electricity. In my eyes, the biggest problem with electric cars is long trips. A fuel-based vehicle is quick and easy to refuel, while an electric battery-based car needs to be charged for a while. Also, the ‘better for the environment’ charge is often debated; while electricity is generally produced more effeciently than the power from vehicle’s combustion engine, the construction of the batteries may be very bad for the environment.
